The study of art history explores how societies and individuals have used the visual arts to convey the ideas and values that were important to them.

Program Offerings at Grand Valley

In addition to artists and their work, art historians study the interpretation of visual material and how it changes over time. The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Coursework

The curriculum offers students a broad-based knowledge of the visual arts from a global perspective while learning historical, cultural, and theoretical approaches to works of art. At the intermediate level, majors take specialized courses focusing on a historical period, geographical region, or conceptual theme that allow for in-depth study of a topic.
