More than 150 artists and donors attended an event May 20 to celebrate artwork in the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons.

At the “Art in the Evening” event, attendees had the opportunity to meet the artists and talk about their work. More than 800 works of art adorn the four-story building.

President Thomas J. Haas said Grand Valley’s campus is a canvas and art is instrumental in shaping and influencing a student’s perspective.

Henry Matthews, director of Galleries and Collections, said when he began working at Grand Valley 16 years ago, there were 700 pieces of art on campus. Today, there are more than 12,000. “A great deal of it has been donated by artists, owners and others. We wouldn’t have the campus we have today without their donations,” he said.

Matthews said the newly renovated Zumberge Hall will hold about 400 pieces of art.
