Speech – Language Pathology

It is said that “Speech Pathologists have ways of making you talk,” and at Grand Valley State University we have many, many ways to enhance communication.  This emphasis prepares students for graduate programs in speech-language pathology, audiology or speech science.

Drawing from the surrounding communities Speech-Language Pathologists are offering opportunities for mentoring, clinical placements, and research opportunities. Our undergraduate students spend time interacting with children, young adults, parents, and mature senior citizens. Collaborative opportunities abound for students: spending time playing with babies, visiting schools, observing therapy in rehabilitation hospitals and nursing homes, and implementing communication opportunities and safe eating practices for senior citizens.

At Grand Valley we pride ourselves on a rigorous curriculum.  Our students meet the university requirements as well as adhering to the best practice standards required by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing-Association www.asha.org . ASHA provides supports and information to students to help select graduate programs, a clearing-house for employment, continuing education events, certification, and annual conferences among many other activities.

Anatomy and physiology is always a difficult task.  To enhance learning of the anatomy of the head, in October groups of students practice lecture skills by creating Dr. Beth Macauley got the idea from . . . and provided the raw materials.  Student comments indicated that this was one of the best projects to help with studying.
