Shared Memories

Lots of memories. Great friends - Program Board, Tri Sigma and the Honors Program. The air band competition was some of the top - especially the state competition. I met so many people, enjoyed a great show and worked with great people, especially Bob Stoll, Bart Merkle and Andy Beachnau! The classes were great too! Wonderful faculty and always helpful peers, especially those who assisted at the computer lab - loved you.

Alex Nesterenko became my adviser after several tries of getting into the appropriate classes. His kindness, and generosity, made it so I could graduate on time, but he also gave me personal insight to my future prospects. I almost gave up, but he pushed me to succeed and finish my degree. I'm now working at the Sarcoma Clinic at the University of Michigan, with a wonderful job, that without my degree, I wouldn't have even been considered. Thank you Mr. Nesterenko!!!

I just received my 10 year "Happy Anniversary" letter and had to laugh because it's been 11 years. I never know what graduation year to put down because I finished my BSW and walked in 2001, but I didn't get my degree until 2002! Confused yet? I finished my degree and shook the hand of President Arend Lubbers, but then I stopped the process of "officially" receiving my degree. Why? Well, I was planning on studying abroad in Mexico for two semesters from 2001-2002. The financial advisor at GVSU told me that if I was still "officially" an undergrad, that I would be eligible for more money. So, I stopped the process and stayed an undergrad. When I came back in the spring of 2002, I called GVSU and asked for my degree. They sent me my degree with the new president's signature- Mark Murray. So, on my resume, I put down 2002 since that is my "official" date even though I walked in 2001.

One of my favorite memories of Grand Valley was being asked to be on the student committee that chose the colors for the new Dorms that were being built and what would go into the new student center. It is great to know that i had input into the building of buildings that would be used for many years to come.

You could say my entire GVSU experience in one statement: Campus Life! From being a founding member of Phi Sigma Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, to serving on the Student Senate; I have seen all there is to Grand Valley. Though, the greatest memory I have is taking my sister, Erica (B.S. Advertising, 2012), on the "Grand Tour" of the Allendale and Grand Rapids campuses, while talking to administrators and faculty and sharing the history along the way. GVSU is not a school to me; it's a place I call home. Laker for Life! (Picture of my sister and me outside the Student Services Building fountain after the Hot August Night event 2010)

I loved helping start the student section at the Men's and Women's basketball game with alot of my friends. We then took our cheering all the way down to Hot Springs Arkansas to Cheer on the Lady Lakers in the Elite 8. That ended up being a year of traveling south quite a bit with Alabama and Arkansas!

My favorite memory as a GVSU graduate student was the moment when I walked across the stage at the Spring Commencement Ceremony and received my diploma. What a fantastic feeling of academic accomplishment and pride in knowing that I was then, at that moment, a member of the GVSU alumni family. Go Lakers!

Nearly ALL of my greatest memories at GVSU were shared with my sorority sisters of Sigma Kappa. We had socials, we had fun, but most of all, we learned how important it is to be philanthropic; to give back to the community and the university with time, talent and treasure.
