Over 50 people attended the Celebration of Women in Sport and Physical Activity on Saturday, February 21. Attendees watched the Laker women's basketball team defeat Hillsdale College, followed by a reception at the Alumni House. Lorin Cartwright was a keynote speaker, and honoree, Jill Meerman, also spoke. The first ever Boand & Rowe Scholarship for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity was awarded on this day to Ms. Danielle Johnson. She was given $1000 for the Fall/Winter 2015-2016 semester.
Despite record cold temperatures in Nashville, 22 Laker alumni and guests attended the Nashville Alumni Networking Reception on February 19, 2015 at Blackstone Restaurant and Brewery.New club leaders Jenny, '04 & Joe, '07 Lashuay were introduced. The group enjoyed local brews, southern inspired snacks and played a networking game to get to know one another. They mingled with the help of a networking scavenger hunt, reminisced about their favorite experiences on campus and learned about the latest additions to Grand Valley.
The next event will be a service project taking place sometime March 21-28, 2015 for Community Outreach Week.
Nearly 70 College of Education students took part in the College of Education Alumni Association's Cover Letter and Resume Roundtable event on February 11 at the DeVos Campus. Eleven GVSU alumni who serve as administrators in the West Michigan area shared their expertise with students on what they look for when they are hiring.
The African American Alumni Association and Latin@ Alumni Chapter hosted “Life Beyond the Classroom,” a panel discussion for students on how to prepare for the future. Students were able to network prior to the discussion with alumni and ask questions during the evening. A total of seven alumni shared their experiences with the students, including three alumni who teleconferenced in to the event from the Detroit Center.
The annual Lints Meet boasted a turn out of approximately 90 people; including Laker alumni, students, family and friends of the university. Alumni got the chance to compete on the track again, socialize with former teammates while enjoying food donated by Menna’s Joint.
In its first meet of the calendar year, the Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams each picked up wins at the 2015 Mike Lints Alumni Open at the Kelly Family Sports Center while a slew of Lakers achieved NCAA Provisional qualifier times.
On January 14, 2014 "the mountains were out" in Seattle as Lakers gathered at the Alibi Room to socialize and hear university updates from Seattle Alumni Club leader Eric Maino, '05 along with Alexis Alt, '09 and Alexis Rangel, '10 of GVSU Alumni Relations. The newly formed Swim & Dive Chapter made a splash on January 10, 2015 as 82 attendees gathered in the Alumni House & Visitor Center to celebrate the kickoff. University President Thomas J. Haas, Athletic Director Tim Selgo, current GVSU Swim Coach Andy Boyce, and Alumni Chapter Leader Mackenzie Satkoski made remarks during the reception. The Lakers beat Wayne State earlier that day in a swim meet held in the Fieldhouse. The group also celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the Men’s 2004-05 swim team – GLIAC Championship.
