David VanderWall, '68

After four years of military service with the United States Navy David VanderWall, ’68 came to Grand Valley State University where he earned his B.A in biology. He continued to medical school at Michigan State University where he held various teaching and research positions including fellowships in plastic surgery and acute burn care. VanderWall was selected as Outstanding Medical Student Research Fellow from the Michigan Heart Association before graduating in 1972.
 
Starting as an intern, VanderWall would complete his residency in general surgery at Butterworth and Blodgett Memorial Medical Center. He has since published and presented several papers during his career.
 
In addition to being on staff at Butterworth Hospital, Blodgett Memorial Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Mary Free Bed Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, VanderWall also had a private practice in downtown Grand Rapids. He served as a Trustee for the Grand Valley Colleges Foundation and as a member to the American Medical Association, the Kent Medical Society, and the Michigan State Medical Society.
 
He currently enjoys retirement with wife, Sharon in Grand Haven.
