Afternoon Session ~

"Technology as a Tool for Teaching: Innovating Community Instruction for Adolescents with ASD"

The use of readily available technology is transforming the way we approach education.  At this moment there are over 1,100 applications ("Apps") available in the I Tunes store targeting education for individuals with autism.  Portable devices such as IPads, I Pods, and smartphones are taking teachers out of the equation in the instructional interaction - but is the effectiveness of these applications or the use of these devices empirically validated?

This presentation will provide an overview of effective, intensive community based instruction including specific examples of how typically existing technology can be utilized and adapted to promote independence, dignity and quality of life for individuals with ASD.

Learning Objectives:

After having attended this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between social survival and social competence and the applications of both.
  • Discuss the importance of direct, intensive instruction in adaptive behavior if community living is expected to be the outcome of an effective education.
  • Discuss the implications of technology in promoting independence and personal competence in the community.
  • Identify the available technology and their uses in conventional and unconventional teaching and staff training paradigm.
  • Incorporate the use of technology into their teaching and staff training protocols.
