"Social Skill Strategies that Work"

This session will cover a number of strategies to assess and teach social skills to youth with ASD. The session will present a selection of strategies that I have found to be particularly beneficial for youth with ASD during my experiences as a clinician and researcher. The session will present both well established and new, innovative practices that I am currently investigating at the Social Skills Research Center.

A substantial portion of the session will be devoted to one evidence-based strategy to address the needs of children with ASD: video self-modeling (VSM). The presentation will examine the research on video modeling and VSM, and discuss why these strategies are particularly beneficial to children on the autism spectrum. Obstacles to implementing VSM will be discussed and solutions will be offered. Numerous applied examples of how to implement these interventions with children on the autism spectrum will be covered and a special emphasis will be placed on outlining easy to implement video modeling interventions.

After having attended this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Increase awareness of effective social skill strategies
  • Develop skills necessary to implement social skills strategies
  • Learn steps for implementing reciprocal intervention strategies
  • Develop skills to plan and implement video modeling intervention
  • Increase awareness (and identify solutions) of obstacles to implementing video modeling interventions.

About the Presenter ~

Dr. Scott Bellini is the Director of Research and Clinical Services at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism (IRCA) and a faculty member in the School Psychology program at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is also the Director of the Social Skills Research Center (SSRC), a university based center specializing in developing and empirically examining the outcomes of social skill interventions for youth with ASD.

He is a licensed psychologist in the state of Indiana and an endorsed Health Services Provider in Psychology. He is currently conducting research on professional development outcomes for educators, anxiety disorders, and social skill interventions, including video modeling for youth with ASD.

He has published numerous research manuscripts and has provided consultation and training to families and professionals in over 30 states on the topic of social skills programming for students with ASD. He is the author of the book, Building Social Relationships, which was named the 2007 Literary Work of the Year by the Autism Society of America.
