2014 Honors Band Schedule and Audition Information
Dear Students, Parents and Directors:
We would like to invite musicians in grades 9-12 to apply for the Grand Valley State University High School Honors Band. The Honors Band will be held on the Allendale campus according to the schedule listed below, including the 2:00 P.M. final concert on Sunday. We have had over 120 applicants each year for the 80 available spots and we expect the event this year to be just as popular. I hope that you will be able to join us and encourage other eligible musicians to apply. This will be an outstanding weekend of music making with several new aspects, including an optional parent information session and director luncheon.
Guest Conductor: Lieutenant Colonel R. Michael Mench, Commander of United States Air Force Band Europe. Lt. Col. Mench is a former High School Band director who excels at working with young people and is an experienced performer and professional conductor. He has traveled the world several times over as a musical ambassador of the United States of America with countless performances for the President of United States and dignataries world-wide.
Fee: $25, which helps to offset the costs of meals, music, guest conductor, recordings, group photo and the Honors Band t-shirt. The remainder of the costs are provided by the GVSU Department of Music and Dance.
Housing: As a result of participant input and University insurance and liability guidelines, we will not be offering supervised housing. We would recommend the following hotels: Comfort Suites – Grandville: (616) 667-0733 & Holiday Inn Express – Grandville: (616) 532-0202.
All applications will be online. The honors band is open to all high school musicians from grades 9 - 12. Prior to filling out the application, you must prepare a video recording electronically of the material described below. To do this, go to www.youtube.com
and create an account (if you do not have one). Please use your full name as identification (no nicknames). Upload your video following the instructions provided. Under the video settings, choose “unlisted,” and save the URL for your video’s link. You will enter that URL into the application - the link is below. Each student will need a separate director recommendation, which the director will submit using the link below.
Audition material: Perform two contrasting pieces (solos or etudes). The TOTAL time of your video (including both selections) should be approximately eight minutes in length. Percussionists should submit audition videos of themselves performing on two or three of the following: snare drum, timpani, and mallet percussion. Please position the camera to give the best representation of your sound and so that your embouchure, instrument position, and hand position can be seen, if possible. Please CLEARLY state your name and the titles/composers of the pieces/etudes you are going to perform BEFORE YOU PLAY.
Applications are now closed. We will be posting an update by noon on Wednesday, December 11, 2014.
Should you need assistance from the GVSU Department of Music and Dance, please do not hesitate to contact me at 616-331-2577 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Best Regards -
