Alumni Success Stories

The Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies is committed to helping students discover their passions and gain a liberal education. We strive to provide engaging experiences in areas from study abroad to service learning projects to intensive writing and research opportunities. Students are encouraged to step out of their own worldview and learn from diverse sources of knowledge. Every year, there are students who graduate with unique combinations of majors and interests, and they bring their unique perspective with them as they encounter new challenges and opportunities. We are proud of what our alumni accomplish in their communities and in their careers. Please read about several of our alumni who have used their interdisciplinary learning in creative ways.

Why did you choose to attend Grand Valley?
I chose to attend Grand Valley because I knew it was a well-respected school. I also knew they had a Grand Rapids location.

What was the highlight of your Grand Valley experience?
The highlight of my Grand Valley experience was the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Just being able to get into the community and mentor somebody formed the whole passion that I have in life today, which is to help people in need.

How has Grand Valley helped you achieve your goals?
Grand Valley pretty much helped me set a foundation for where I wanted to go in life. It helped me not only mature, but also take my life to the next level.

What advice would you give to prospective students?
My advice would be to never give up and don't let anybody tell you that you can't do it. If you know that the risk is 50 percent that you don't succeed, there's also 50 percent that you will succeed. So no matter where your passions are, no matter what your dreams are, always go for those.
