WGVU interviews with Julie Bulson, Tim Bulson, & Jack Stewart regarding the Community Reading Project:

Julie Bulson 

With over 30 years experience in healthcare (20 years in healthcare emergency preparedness), Julie Bulson, MPA, BSN, RN, currently serves as Spectrum Health’s Director, Emergency Preparedness. Ms. Bulson has oversight of all emergency preparedness program development for Spectrum Health Hospital Group (10 acute care hospitals including a children’s hospital; level one adult and pediatric trauma centers; regional burn center; long term care sites; several urgent care centers; a large medical group [>700 providers]; and a national insurance provider). She has been instrumental in the development of the first hospital based decontamination response team and a formalized scribe / operator team (SOT) in the region. She participates on many state/regional/community emergency preparedness planning committees. Ms. Bulson has presented at several national and local emergency preparedness conferences and has co-authored several articles related to healthcare emergency preparedness.

Tim Bulson 

His career includes work as a communications professional, a health care planner, a grant and project developer, a Grand Valley State University School of Communications Senior Part-Time Faculty member, and a professional writer.

He is currently Director of Community Relations for St. Ann’s and is in his 12th year as a Part Time Faculty member with GVSU, teaching a variety of communications classes and serving on academic committees.

He worked a decade as a Regional Health Care Emergency Preparedness Coordinator on the federal health care preparedness project, specifically with 13 West Michigan counties and their health care partners who focus on improving health department, hospital and EMS agency response to potential mass-casualty, crisis, and weapons of mass destruction events.

From 1987 – 2002 he was a Communications Coordinator with Butterworth Health System / Spectrum Health. He worked from 1982 – 1987 as a Grand Rapids Press reporter and began his career there as a freelancer while finishing up his Bachelor’s Degree in English from Aquinas College. He also attended Grand Rapids Junior College, is an Ottawa Hills High School graduate, and completed his Masters of Science in Communications at GVSU.

Jack Stewart

As Emergency Management Coordinator for Kent County and the City of Grand Rapids, Jack is responsible for coordinating disasters and emergencies, developing and updating disaster operations plans and other support activities which includes; working with local agencies and jurisdictions on preparedness activities.

•Representative and former chair of the Region 6 Homeland Security Planning Board •Chairman of the Region 6 Homeland Security Critical Infrastructure / Key Resources committee.(•State of Michigan –Certified Professional Emergency Manager.

•Dept. of Homeland Security – Certified Critical Infrastructure Risk and Threat Assessment.(•FEMA Certified Incident Command System Trainer.(•Former Kent County Sheriff Dept. Deputy of the Year.

•2009 State of Michigan Professional Emergency Manager of the Year.(•2013 Michigan Emergency Managers Association Distinguished Service Award Recipient •Serves as an advisor on school violence issues for area school districts, and has assisted districts in establishing Threat and Violence Assessment Teams (TVAT) as well as serving on those teams for districts within Kent County.(•Presentations include, School Behavioral Threat Assessment for the Great Lakes Regional Homeland Security conference.
