Zumberge Library

Zumberge Administration Building is currently under renovation.

The Libraries contents are being moved to the new Mary Idema Pew Library and Information Commons which will open Fall, 2013.

History:

 Zumberge Library has received several awards for its architectural design. The building has five levels, the top four used by the library and the lower level by the university's executive offices. Named after Grand Valley's first president, the library holds 777,000 volumes, 523,000 electronic journals and books, and scores of other materials. As a  Federal Depository Library, it receives catalogs and large numbers of federal and state documents.

The James H. Zumberge Library is named for Grand Valley State University's first president.

Dr. Zumberge served as president of Grand Valley State Colleges from 1963-1969. After leaving Grand Valley, Dr. Zumberge went on to serve as president of Southern Methodist University and became the ninth president of the University of California. A geology professor, James Zumberge also was reknown for leading expeditions in Antarctica. Cape Zumberge and the Zumberge Coast in Antarctica were named for him. He passed away April 15, 1992.

The library building was built in 1969 and received several awards for its architectural design. The five level building houses over 650,000 volumes, 3,500 periodicals, and numerous microfiche and microfilm, video, DVD's, CD's and vinyl recordings. The library hosts numerous computers, checks out laptops and includes a computer lab.Students, faculty, and staff may access e-books online and search within over 250 databases, many with full-text journal articles.

Included in the building are a curriculum materials and an extensive juvenile collection. The library is a selective Federal Depository Library housing large numbers of documents. Many are online and linked through the libraries catalog.  Zumberge Library is the main library in a multi-location library system at the university. The university administration offices are also located in the Zumberge Library.
