Faculty and Researcher News

Melissa Morison is just back from Corinth where her expertise assisted in the analysis of an excavation of a site from the late antique period.  Her work will help us understand this epicenter of 4th-6th C political and economic reorganization that brought changing social institutions and economic processes.  Access to these artifacts is so limited that Professor Morison's invitation to work on them is an acknowledgement of her standing in the profession.

AWRI Continues Excellent Community Service

October 21, 2008 marked a milestone of sorts.   This was the first time that leaders from the Greater Muskegon Area joined their cohorts in Northwest Ottawa County to consider the Sustainability of the West Michigan region.  The event was titled, “Toward a More Sustainable Community” and was hosted by the Muskegon Area Sustainability Coalition (MASC) at the Trillium Conference Facility in Ferrysburg, Michigan.  This gathering was attended by more than 130 people and included a keynote presentation from Grand Valley’s own Norman Christopher, Executive Director of Sustainability at GVSU.  Also included on the agenda were roundtable discussions concerning almost a dozen topic areas covering for example alternative energy, local food systems, social equity, and regional transportation.  Also discussed were “Sustainability Principles”, “2020 Action Steps”, and the “Prosperity Index” created by MASC volunteers including John Koches, Associate Research Scientist, and Jon VanderMolen, Research Assistant, at the Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI) – GVSU.  The event was particularly rewarding for AWRI staff as they helped to create and organize MASC as a partnership with the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and the Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce.  You can learn more about the event and MASC by either contacting John Koches at kochesj@gvsu.edu.

Helping Students Make the Connection Between Major and Career

For many students, deciding on a major can seem like a daunting task, however connecting that major to a career path can be even more challenging for liberal arts and science students. Since you have “been there and done that”, consider helping a student with these difficult decisions by serving as a resource in the Career Contact Bank. This database, accessible only by current students, is a way for students to connect with employers and learn more about a particular field of interest. Please visit http://www.gvsu.edu/careercontact/ and click on the “Employer” link to learn more about this valuable tool.

Anther great way to connect with students and help them explore their career options is to provide internship opportunities within your organization. Internships provide students with a valuable work experience that not only assists in career exploration, but enhances their skills and knowledge in a specific field—all while providing you with enthusiastic and inexpensive manpower! Internships are also a great way to evaluate and recruit fresh talent. To learn more about how you can create internship opportunities within your organization, please call the Internship Specialist with GVSU’s Career Services, at 331-2394 (area code 616) .
