Media Ecology Associations 14th annual convention begins

Grand Valley is hosting the Media Ecology Association’s 14th annual convention in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on June 20-23, 2013. The GVSU Provost's Office, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Communications are its major sponsors, and Corey Anton and Valerie V. Peterson of the School of Communications are the Convention Co-Planners.

The aim of this international convention is to provoke academic dialogue, raise public awareness of media ecology, and discuss the relevance of media ecological thought to the broader culture. The 14th Annual Convention, with the theme of “unplugged,” will feature papers, panels, creative projects, and other proposals presenting research and/or exploring topics and ideas related to the convention theme.

Media ecology “unplugged” seeks to remind people that media technologies are not simply plug-in devices. The “unplugged” theme is meant to capture the wide span of environmental mediation prior to the wired and plugged-in revolution of mass media, including: architecture, literacy, urban design, transportation, art, and other discursive and non-discursive forms. It also turns attention to recent and cutting-edge technologies that have de-tethered from the plug, including: satellites, nanotechnology, robotics, genetic engineering, modern pharmacology, cell phones, bluetooth, e-readers, solar cells, green technologies, neuroscience, and much more.

Featured speakersinclude

Morris Berman (author of the Trilogy on Human Consciousness and The Twilight of American Culture),

Lance Strate (former MEA president and author of The Binding Biases of Time), and

Dominique Scheffel-Dunand (the Director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto).

To registerand for more information on the Media Ecology Association, please visit the Media Ecology Association website at www.media-ecology.org

Early Bird Registration

The pre-registration deadlinefor the convention is May 15th. After this deadline, the MEA will take the “sustaining membership” link off of the website. After May 15th, you can only pay the conference fee onsite, and must pay the increased onsite registration fee (listed on the website).

Hotel

The Amway Grand Hotel is the designated convention hotel, and will also be the site of the banquet (free to all registered participants). To receive the convention rate, reservations need to be made by phone (not online) and you need to identify yourself as a participant in the MEA Convention (call1-800-253-3590). The hotel convention rate is $137.00 plus 8% occupancy tax and 6% state tax (single, double, triple or quad occupancy).
