Angela Davis Writing Project
This is an invitation to join the Angela Davis Writing Project at Grand Valley State University.
This past semester, a group of seven or eight of us from different parts of the university met five times and read seven writing projects. We enjoyed intense and productive conversations with each author about their work. Members of the group consistently welcomed high levels of constructive commentary on their writing projects, which included book chapters, scholarly articles, and creative works. We are open to many other kinds of projects as well.
A main practical objective of this project is to read and discuss current projects under way by project members that in some aspect fulfill the imperatives described below. The project members should meet regularly to discuss current work, to provide one another with insights, and challenge one another to complete, present, and publish scholarly projects.
The project is named for well-known activist and scholar, Angela Davis, whose work, life, and commitments represent the intersections of radical, working-class, black, feminist, internationalist, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and questioning (lgbtqiq) politics, identities and communities, and agendas for individual and collective liberation and equality.
The aim of the ADWP is to provide a productive space for scholars who share this global and local vision to engage in the praxis of writing, teaching, and activism.
An ultimate aim will be to build, to connect, and to form alliances, in order to challenge political, ideological, and disciplinarian boundaries (including our own) in the process of being and becoming educators, learners, and human beings.
We share Angela Davis’ own stated outlook: the dialectical unity and contradictions of utopia, reality as it is (or was) and the work of making change, with a special focus on words, cultures, ideas, ideologies, and the industry of scholarship.
Please contact us to express your interest.
