2. Out of the Box Events sponsored by CLAS Faculty Council

Announcing the Annual Out-of-the-Box Events!
Theme: Thriving Throughout a Sustainable Career: Getting Your Groove Back!
Hosted by CLAS Faculty Council and sponsored by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

CLAS faculty are invited to participate in one of three exciting workshops offered this fall for a successful and sustainable academic career. The workshops will draw on university, college and faculty expertise to explore how to have a sustainable lifelong career in academia, successful in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service as well as how to thrive when your job description changes by choice or by chance. Come join us for great conversation, new ideas, and good food!

Philosophy underlying the workshops: CLAS faculty have a job description that can be very rewarding and dynamic over time based on needs of the college, the department, as well as personal life.  As one progresses through an academic career once tenure is attained; the next step can be daunting.  Promoting a dynamic balance between teaching, scholarship and service is a challenge, especially when you want or need change.  Many resources and opportunities exist to promote a successful career but more can be done within the college by developing flexible, creative, innovative, and cooperative solutions to common problems related to workload and career support.

How will we do this? Workshop participants will learn from colleagues who have a successful, sustainable and dynamic career.  Resources will be shared to promote and nurture choices related to workload and work-life balance.  Scenarios will be explored and solutions developed, and attendees will examine workload policy. Resources identified by the workshops will be compiled on a webpage so that all odd CLAS faculty may benefit.

We encourage faculty from all CLAS disciplines to participate. We expect innovative, creative thinking to emerge as faculty with diverse perspectives develop “out-of-the-box” solutions to common issues related to resources and opportunities.

How many faculty can participate at each event? 24

The registrar’s office sent faculty notice of the upcoming timeline for midterm grade reporting, Oct 10- noon on Oct 18. For those faculty who are newer to the process, midterm grades are reported for all freshman and for any student who has issue(s) related to academic progress. Please check your banner account next week to see if there are grades required. Thanks for your support of our students.
