For Faculty

1. Your opportunity to hear the Associate Dean candidates

On Friday, Nov. 15 (about 12:18pm) an e-mail was send to you letting you know about the chance to hear from the three candidates for the Associate Dean position.  It carries the title "Invitation to join in the AD Search process - message from Mark Richards".

2. Update on the Student Success Collaborative and major advising guides  – Mary Schutten

Thank you all for participating in the startup meetings related to the Student Success Collaborative. In addition to sharing the advising potential of this program, each unit received workbooks with suggested success markers. We hope you have begun to discuss these markers as a unit and are moving toward identifying the success markers that make sense for your students. In order to develop the student advising tools and begin to train advisors in the implementation of the tools, we need your unit’s success markers for each major by February 1, 2014. Once these success markers are identified, please send them to Betty Schaner and Mary Schutten.

There has been discussion this semester about reconfiguring advising guides for major programs. Since it will be helpful to edit these guides based on the identified success markers, CLAS would like units to postpone those advising guide revisions until the success markers are identified and the university has developed the template for the guides.

For majors and programs that have changed requirements since the collaborative data was gathered (Fall 2009), please be sure to include the “old” requirements as well as “new” in your Success Markers. This can be done by using the “either/or” language on the success markers. For example, if the previous course was ENG 100 and the new course is ENG 200, list it as “Either ENG 100 or ENG 200 by term 2”. Since our catalogs are valid for eight years, we will need to include all requirements currently in effect…if only the new requirements are listed, all students who started the program before those were implemented will be flagged as “at risk”.

3. A Schedule Thanks-giving

I want to extend my kudos, those of everyone in the College Office, and the provost’s office’s kudos and thanks for your conscientious and successful work on scheduling Round 1 for next year.  Many CLAS units were asked to add more sections and seats in high-demand courses (or perhaps reduce them in areas that have traditionally low enrollments). After reviewing Round 1, Joe Godwin commends CLAS for doing “very well [his font] helping us meet next year’s expected demand” and warmly thanks the departments for their help.  University-wide, there are 119 more sections scheduled for next year, with 4300+ more seats, a fair proportion of which are in CLAS. Gary and I, too, deeply appreciate your efforts to accommodate the provost’s requests and to provide more seats for our incoming freshmen.  You know how important that recruitment is.  Well done!  I’m proud to work with such able and committed people.

4. Special Projects graduate assistantships for the 2014-15 academic year  – Dean Potteiger (4 attachments: Rules, Guidelines for Job Description, Criteria, Requesting Special Projects GA )

The Office of Graduate Studies is now accepting requests for Special Projects graduate assistantships for the 2014-15 academic year.

Please submit your proposal on or before December 13, 2013.  Please submit all documents electronically to Irene Fountain at fountaii@gvsu.edu.

Please review the Guidelines for Requesting Special Projects Graduate Assistantships, and the Graduate Assistantship Rules 2014-2015, prior to writing your proposal. The documents are attached.  Please note the following:

1.  Special Projects GAs are awarded on a highly competitive basis. We have a limited number of positions to award, and we receive considerably more requests than we can support.  Be sure to take your time to write a strong proposal and thoroughly review it before submission.

2.  If you received a Special Projects GA for the 2013-14 academic year, you must submit a progress report with your proposal.

We will notify you via email whether or not you are awarded a Special Projects GA on or before January 10, 2014.
