For Faculty
1. Classroom and hallway safety
It has been pointed out by some unit heads that in the classroom buildings there is an increase in the number of students gathered on narrow hallway floors working on small group assignments. In the older buildings in particular, groups of students sitting or lying in the narrower hallways pose a risk as well as impede the flow of traffic. If you are sending students to the hallways to work, please direct them to the more open areas of the building or possibly an adjacent room. Thank you for your help.
2. GVSU Policy-- Snow Closing during Final Exams
In the event that a closing or cancellation would involve a specified exam day, those exams affected would be held on the next available day after the exam week has concluded. For example - If a Tuesday exam day were affected, the next available day after the conclusion of the exam week would be Saturday. If two exam days were affected, i.e. Wednesday and Thursday, Wednesday’s exam would take place on Saturday and Thursday’s exam would be the following Monday. Additional info at : http://www.gvsu.edu/gvpd/emergency-closing-policy-67.htm
3. Secure Office Procedures—periodic reminder (attachment)
It is the responsibility of all employees of the University to protect sensitive data against loss or theft. Awareness, education and practice of the following procedures can assist in this matter. Please review this attached procedures carefully. http://www.gvsu.edu/registrar/ferpa-access-to-student-records-21.htm
4. Understanding and implementing the private information security policy (attachment)
At GVSU, data is appropriately stored on the L and N Drives of GVSU servers where it is secure and regularly backed up. In addition to one’s desktop computer, these drives can be accessed from other locations on campus or from home.
Sensitive data (for example, Social Security Numbers, unlisted phone numbers and grades) should not be stored on local drives (such as the “Desktop” or C drive of desktop computers and laptops) nor on removable disks, such as peripheral disk drives, CDs, DVDs or flash drives (also known as thumb drives or memory sticks). Not only are these disks and drives susceptible to theft, unintended trips through the laundry, accidental breakage or loss, they are not routinely backed up. Sensitive data should not be stored on home computers.
Please see attached document for more details.

5. Part-time faculty teaching awards
The Director of Part-time Faculty Support, Dana Munk, is trying to learn more about how departments and colleges at GVSU recognize and reward part-time faculty for teaching excellence. If your department offers teaching awards for part-time faculty could you forward the criteria and any other information about the award to munkd@gvsu.edu ?
Many thanks for your support of this important group of faculty at GVSU. ~Dana Munk
