  1. CLAS Holiday Open House, Dec. 7th

Last year, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences solicited input from CLAS faculty and staff members to gather opinions about the timing of the College’s annual holiday party. The overall feedback was that faculty and staff would benefit from moving the luncheon to the following week, to move the event further away from the University’s awards celebration (Dec. 1) and closer to the holidays. As a result, this year’s CLAS Holiday Open House will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7th in the Pere Marquette Room (2204 KC).  Unit Heads – please share with your staff as well.

2. Student Summer Scholars Applications (attachment)

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) is currently accepting applications for Student Summer Scholars 2012.

Program Description

The Student Summer Scholars Program (S3) provides funds for a student and faculty mentor to devote twelve weeks to a research and/or creative project during the spring/summer semester.  Generally, S3 grants provide a student stipend, faculty stipend, and a small budget for supplies.  Through these grants and the mentorship of a faculty mentor, S3 offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to do hands-on, professional research and creative practice in their chosen field.  Combining academics, field work, and a reflection component provides students with a meaningful learning experience that helps to prepare them for graduate school and future careers.

Grant Information

S3 grants provide a $3,000 student stipend and a small budget for project expenses.  Faculty mentors can receive up to a $2,500 stipend.

Application Process

The application is a collaborative effort between the potential student scholar and the faculty mentor.  Completed applications are due Friday, January 27, 2012.  Apply online at www.gvsu.edu/ours/s3.
