1. Syllabus Construction, a proactive tool for student success- Mary Schuttenÿ

As the semester ends and another is just around the New Year, thinking ahead to the Winter 2014 syllabus. People often ask this office what types of student appeals are most challenging? The most challenging ones involve grade appeals in courses where course information is incomplete or absent on the syllabus such as an academic integrity statement, grading scale, basis for assigning grades, etc.. The absence of course information increases the stress of both student and faculty alike. A complete syllabus is a proactive tool to support student success throughout the course. The Faculty Handbook and the PEW FTLC are two great resources for syllabus construction. According to the Faculty Handbook, there is an outline of Information Given Class at First Meeting (3.01.H.1):

1. A syllabus.

2. The title, department, and number of the course.

3. Prerequisites to the course, if any.

4. The name, office number, and office hours of the instructor offering the course.

5. An explanation of policy relative to student absences.

6. The objectives and requirements of the course.

7. The basis for grading in the course.

8. The texts and/or laboratory supplies required for the course.

9. Date and time of final examination (from published exam schedule)

d. Office Hours for Student Conferences Members of the faculty are expected to post and maintain adequate office hours.

The PEW FTLC has a white paper regarding syllabus construction in  its January Preview email sent to all faculty that would be very useful  http://www.gvsu.edu/cms3/assets/B78A66C2-A774-13A2-78CDCF13A1345FC3/resourcehandouts/syllabus_handout_7-13_web.pdf
