For Faculty and Staff

1. The Gender Question

Colleagues, the Diversity Affairs Committee of Student Senate recently brought an issue to CLAS’s attention. Currently, on the faculty evaluation given to some CLAS students, there is an item asking students to specify their gender. The options are either "male" or "female." This binary belies the actual diversity of Grand Valley State University, and some students may feel uncomfortable denominating themselves as one or the other, and Student Senate, rightly, is calling for a change to this practice.

Most studies about evaluation forms and questions indicate that many of these “demographic” questions are pretty useless.   I know that they are largely if completely unused; I don’t know that any unit has ever tried to correlate information like “are you degree seeking or non degree seeking” or “gender” with any of the responses about the course itself. In short, I submit there is simply no need for a question about student gender.  I ask simply that it be removed, unless you have a data correlation project planned or underway, in which case I’d ask you to describe its processes and purposes to me.  I understand that a new batch of a certain form was printed, so we may have a couple of year’s supply. In that case, students should be told to simply ignore the question.

Thanks for your efforts in making GVSU more inclusive for our students.

~Fred

2. Request for Appropriate Service Photos

Do you have a nice, high resolution photograph of faculty, staff, students or alumni performing service in the last year or so?  Please screen out any that show people wearing gear from other universities or not-ready-for-prime-time-sayings on T shirts.  Please send only your very best shots (not entire CDs!).  No shots with children unless you also have their signed photo releases.  These photos are intended for consideration for a print publication of the college so we cannot use any that are low resolution or otherwise inappropriate.  Why not get a shot with a real camera (not a low end phone) of your service project, committee, or community service class project?  Email to clas@gvsu.edu by April 15.
