For Faculty and Staff

1. Nomination for Promotion to Full Professors Forms due

Faculty who are being considered for tenure must complete the Nomination for Promotion Form if they also wish to be considered for promotion to Full Professor in Fall 2014.  The nomination form is due to the CLAS Dean’s Office (B-4-232 MAK) by March 30, 2014.

2. Call for April 25th Annual Big Data Conference submissions (attachment)

Our Big Data conference is coming up – April 25th in the Russel H Kirkhof Center. The conference planning group has been working on all the details. I’ll post the call for submissions on our Big Data website as well.

Please consider submitting to the conference, as well as forwarding the call to anyone who might be interested. Looking forward to another terrific conference!

Dr. Maria Cimitile, Asst. Vice President for Academic Affairs

3. Share Your Ideas to Save Search Committees’ Time

As College office staff has participated in search committees this year, we’ve noted some of the less “user friendly” aspects of the existing online application system and could imagine some suggested improvements that would support the work of search committees.  Now that it is not uncommon for an opening to receive over 200 complex applications, the management and review of these documents asks a great deal of faculty serving on search committees.  HR has expressed willingness to meet with us and hear our suggestions so that they can explore what might be done to make our system better.  Unit Heads and interested faculty may attend the meeting on April 14 at 2pm in B-4-243 MAK or can send us descriptions of difficulties with the system and/or suggested improvements so that we can bring them to the table.  For room set-up purposes, please let us know if you intend to be present at the meeting.  I’ll be the contact person.  ~Monica johnstmo@gvsu.edu

 4.  New Graduate Assistant in Grants Office (Sponsored Programs) Ready to Assist with Grant Searches

Heather DeCoster has joined the Office of Sponsored Programs as the new graduate assistant.  Her primary role is to help faculty and staff with in-depth grant searches.  Before joining the OSP team, Heather worked in a variety of positions in healthcare communications and project management.  She brings with her extensive writing experience and a passion to connect people with the perfect funding opportunities.  If Heather can help you with a grant search, contact her at decosthe@gvsu.edu or (616) 331-6826.

5. Who to work with when seeking outside funding for a project (attachment)

This past Fall, Robert Smart and Christine Chamberlain for the Center of Scholarly and Creative Excellence and Jennifer Wardrop and Scott Blinkhorn for University Development worked together to craft guidance to the university community on who to work with when seeking funding for a project (programmatic, instructional, research, etc.) from a foundation, individual, or corporation.

Attached you will find a copy of the final guidelines on this that were accepted and endorsed by Gayle Davis, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, James Bachmeier, Vice President for Finance and Administration and Karen Loth, Vice President for University Development.

At the end of the attachment you will find a copy of the sheet to be used when initiating this process and seeking clearance.

It is our hope that this will help to clarify which office to deal with and will speed up the approval process for principle investigators and others seeking funding.
