2. Faculty/Staff training opportunity to better understand and assist student veterans at GVSU –   From Steven Lipnicki, Assistant Dean of Students

You may already be aware that nearly 600 current or former military members are anticipated as GVSU students in Fall 2013.  If so, this will represent an increase approaching 300% since 2009-2010 when we began tracking this data.  Since that time, GVSU’s Veterans Network has taken many steps to improve the climate for student veterans to succeed academically and professionally.  These initiatives address transitioning in and out of the University, along with creating on- and off-campus support networks, and providing opportunities for vet-to-vet interaction.  Our progress has resulted in GVSU being recognized as a veteran-friendly university for five consecutive years by GIJobs.com.

Last year, we launched a new training program, originally developed at Cal State – Long Beach, to dispel stereotypes and address the positive attributes that military veterans can bring to the classroom and beyond. The CS-LB program objectives were borrowed from their own LGBT ally program to address misunderstandings of student veterans and their related experiences. During AY 2012-2013, we rolled out the training opportunity and close to 80 staff and 20 faculty members participated in this training.

For 2013-2014, the GVSU’s “Vet Net Ally” program will be delivered by Simeon Switzer, a graduate student in the MPA program who previously served and deployed to Afghanistan with the US Army, and me.

For 2013-2014, we are pleased to make this training opportunity available to any units/departments that request it.  Feel free to share this information with your units as we would be pleased to make any arrangements.
