2. Haiti Events and Requests – message from Mark Schaub
Hi all:
There is a new FOAP established for Haiti relief. This is meant to be a short-term thing only, and while of course Haiti will need relief efforts in years to come (just as it did before the quake), we envision that after two weeks we'll forward the donations on to the relief orgs. and then direct donors to give directly to the relief organizations and not through GVSU.
GVSU (temporary) Haiti Relief Fund
A new designated fund, Haiti Relief, has been created in Banner. The number is 120986 45500 300. Gary Van Harn in our office can assist with getting funds into that acct. and will coordinate closing that account by the end of Feb.
What PIC is doing
PIC is coordinating one educational and fundraising event for Tuesday, 19 Jan., 5 pm in Louis Armstrong Performing Arts Theatre. And we are coordinating short-term collection points in 8 places across Allendale and DeVos campuses.
What We are Not Doing
Adding many collection points. Several units have asked for additional collection points and we have advised them to by all means do this, and maintain vigilance in security of the donations, and then get the funds to Gary Van Harn for deposit. We are not directly planning additional fundraising events but applaud student and campus organizations that do. There is much evidence that the best way to assist is through cash donations, not collections of materials (eg., used clothing, etc.) because of the logistical nightmare of delivery and distribution.
The Relief Organizations
The PIC drive is aimed at Partners in Health (www.pih.org), because of its track record of efficiency and success, its involvement in higher education, and the great books relating to that effort (e.g., T. Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains or Paul Farmer's Pathologies of Power). We're also giving to the GR-based "Rays of Hope for Haiti," which is participating in the Tuesday event and has a good reputation for good in Haiti, with strong connections there and to the Haitian immigrant community in Kent County. Red Cross and countless other great organizations are just as worthy, so by all means give to any of them. Just give.
Thanks for the support in the generous and compassionate GVSU community.
~Mark
