The next lecture is Wednesday, 10 November, 2010 and features Professor James Scott and Professor Emeritus Joan Boand. They will speak on the "Early History of Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics at GVSU." Hope you can attend.

3. General Education Goal Spreadsheet deadline Nov. 1 – Carol Griffin

As Roger and I have explained at the Deans Council meeting and/or your Unit Head meetings, the General Education Committee is developing proposals to:

· revise the Basic Skills requirements

· revise the General Education goals

· revise the structure of the GE program (this is focused mainly on Themes).

All three of these items are interrelated. The focus of this email is the second item - revising the goals.

We have asked each of your Unit Heads to let us how know how easily their current GE Foundation, Cultures, and Themes courses could meet the existing and proposed new GE goals (this is done on the GE goals spreadsheet referred to in the email below). The General Education Committee intends to use the Units' feedback to help inform their proposal(s). They are working hard to have the proposal(s) developed by December. At that point, the proposal(s) will be shared with faculty governance and the rest of the campus community. I would anticipate that much of the Winter term will be spent inviting faculty to deliberate with us on developing the very best General Education Program that GVSU can offer. We'll seek suggestions and comments on the proposal(s) from the campus community via fora, email, Blackboard, etc.

Please encourage your Unit Heads to return their spreadsheet by November 1 so that the Committee can continue to make progress in developing the proposal(s).

The General Education Committee is working on several possible changes to the General Education Program and your input is necessary to help guide the General Education Committee's revision plans. A summary of these changes along with a spreadsheet containing all of the courses you offer in the General Education Program was e-mailed to you on October 4th.

This is a reminder that you must complete and return the General Education goals spreadsheet for your unit to gened@gvsu.edu no later than Monday, November 1, 2010.
