1. Provost to host town hall meetings
Provost Gayle R. Davis will host two Academic Affairs town hall meetings on the Allendale and Pew Grand Rapids campuses.
Discussion will center on the state of academic affairs at Grand Valley, higher education in Michigan, Davis said.
Meetings are set for Wednesday, November 19, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the Eberhard Center; and November 24, 4 p.m., in the Kirkhof Center, room 2204.
2. What are Noroviruses? (attachment)
With the recent breakout at Hope College many questions have come up regarding this virus. Tony Nieuwkoop, Biomedical Health Sciences Chair, has put together a FAQ file to share with faculty, staff, and students.
3. Geography Awareness Week – message from Jeroen Wagendorp
There will be a lecture on Nov. 18 in celebration of Geography Awareness Week. Please share the attachment with your faculty and students.
4. CHAKA – Music of an African Icon-Message from Professor Alvarez
Next Monday, November 17th at 4:30 p.m., South African scholar Johann S. Buis will deliver a lecture on the legendary figure of Chaka, the founder of South Africa's Zulu nation. Please share the attachment with your faculty and students.
5. Additional Rationale Required for Prerequisites in Curriculum Proposals-message from Mary Schutten, Chair of CCC
This message was sent to all CCC Chairs from UCC Chair, Robert Adams.
Please note the change in documentation required by the University Curriculum Committee in the "Prerequisites Section" of New Course Proposals and Course Change Proposals.
Given UCC's recent (and ongoing) pre-requisite removal fast-track process, UCC is requesting that proposers justify each and every pre-requisite course included in a new course proposal or a course change. This will ensure that proposers think about and provide a rationale for why the pre-requisites are needed. In short, this means UCC would like to see something more than "The pre-requisites provide foundation knowledge upon which this course will build." UCC would like to see why EACH pre-requisite course is needed.
Thank you for your cooperation.
-Robert
6. Co-curricular Activities: Second Year Students
In follow-up to last week’s Unit Head discussion about co-curricular activities that enhance first year student success, we’ve been requested by the Provost’s Office to expand our discussion to include second year students. Would each of you please send me a list and brief description of unit co-curricular activities that target promoting the academic success of second year students? Please send your information via e-mail to Donna Larson before Monday, December 1. Thank you.
