Optimizing your site for search engines

  • Unique, accurate page titles

    • When creating a new content item in the CMS, be sure to give your page a unique descriptive title. This title is used by search engines, and is typically displayed as the heading for your listing in the search results.
      • Accurately describe the page's content
      • Create unique title tags for each page
      • Use brief, but descriptive titles
      • Use a couple keywords
  • Make use of the "description" meta tag

    • When creating a new content item in the CMS be sure to click More Options... under the title and fill out a unique description. This description is often used by search engines as the summary of what is on the page. (see example above)

      • Accurately summarize the page's content
      • Use unique descriptions for each page
      • Use several keywords
  • Content is the key!

    • Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors discussed here.

      • Create fresh, unique content
      • Write easy-to-read text
      • Stay organized around the topic
      • Saturate with keywords
      • Offer exclusive content or services
      • Create content primarily for your users, not search engines
  • Use heading tags

    • Since heading tags typically make text contained in them larger than normal text on the page, this is a visual cue to users and search engines that this text is important. When editing a content item in the CMS, highlight text and choose a heading from the Format drop down.

      • Imagine you're writing an outline for the content on your page
      • Use headings sparingly across the page (only where it makes sense)
  • Optimize your use of images

    • When inserting an image into a CMS page, always fill out the Alternative Text field. Describe in a sentence or less what the image is. Also, it helps to name the image file with something descriptive, like allendale_clocktower.jpg vs. using something more generic like image01.jpg
  •  Promote your site

    • This is one of the most influential ways to get your site moved to the top of the search results. Get other sites to link to your site! But be careful or this could adversely effect your ranking. Be selective. Quality of sites that link to yours is more important than quantity.

      • Blog about new content or services
      • Don't forget about offline promotion
      • Use social media sites
      • Add your business to Google's Local Business Center
      • Reach out to those in your site's related community
