Semester of Service-Learning FAQs
What is service-learning?
Service-learning is a teaching methodology in which your students will develop and implement a meaningful service project that is connected to the curriculum you teach. Having your biology class clean up a local park is community service – working with your biology class to team with a local environmental agency, test and assess the effects of pollutants in the area, and problem-solve to prevent pollutants from entering the park is service-learning. For more information visit www.servicelearning.org.
When do I apply to the program?
You will apply to the Semester of Service Learning program when you apply to the student teaching progrm; the two are due at the same time.
How does this affect my student teaching experience?
You would be expected to complete all your normal responsibilities as a student teacher and College of Education student. Think of this program as an opportunity to get a little more out of your student teaching experience (that is, IF you are interested in using service-learning as a teaching methodology).
Will I have to complete any additional coursework for the program?
Your coursework will not change as a result of applying to this program, but you will be asked to attend several additional workshops/workgroups before and during your student teaching semester that specifically address the service-learning experience.
What grade-levels and subject areas are best suited for service-learning?
Teachers from preschool to twelfth grade have successfully implemented high-quality service-learning projects in all subject areas. From social studies to science, to art, mathematics, physical education, special education, language arts, etc., service components can be incorporated into the curriculum. This program provides you with the resources, training, and mentorship to begin your journey into teaching this way.
My placement is in the Detroit area. Am I eligible?
Through our connections with Learn & Serve – Michigan we have been able to establish relationships with schools in the Detroit area who are interested in accepting our student teachers for this program. So yes!
