Practicum Opportunities
|
Each student in the CSAL concentration is required to complete EDG 685 Practicum/Graduate Field Experience. This a field based experience designed to allow students to pursue specialized areas of interest and is completed during the second year of a full-time program. A required component related to the practicum is a seminar that helps students apply theory to practice. Seminar students meet as a group with faculty during Fall and Winter Semesters and meet online during the Spring/Summer Semester. Students must have permission fom the CSAL coordinator to enroll and apply by February 1st for summer and fall semesters by September 15th for winter semester. Students who choose to complete a second practicum may enroll in EDG 601 Content/Curriculum Workshops with permission of the CSAL coordinator. This course satisfies an elective. |

When:
This position is open for Spring/Summer (2 positions) and Fall (1 positions). The work hours will be dependent on applicant availability and will be determined in coordination with the CCPS Advising Center prior to applicant selection. Hours of availability will need to be within the Advising Center’s operating hours of Monday – Friday 9am-5pm during the Spring/Summer and 9am-6pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm on Friday for Fall. The expectation is 10 hours a week for the entire 15 week semester.
Where:
The CCPS Advising Center is located on the Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. The Center supports over 2000 undergraduate students who major or minor in Criminal Justice, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Legal Studies, Public and Non-Profit Adminstration, or Social Work.
What:
This position is open for a CSAL student interested in gaining experience in the academic advising profession. The position will assist the staff of the CCPS Advising Center in reviewing degree requirements, developing academic plans, and assisting students with registration and other academic support issues.
The purpose of this practicum is to:
1) Gain a better understanding of the academic needs of students through academic advising services offered by the College of Community and Public Service.
2) Gain experience working one-on-one with students while also becoming familiar with the practices associated with academic advising, the University, and the student.
3) Gain a better understanding of academic advising philosophy and standards put forth by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS)
Learning Goals:
1) To research and become familiar with the philosophy and history of Academic Advising and to develop a personal advising philosophy statement.
2) To learn more about the services offered to students through the CCPS Advising Center and other related sources.
3) To effectively work with CCPS students one-on-one and in group academic advising meetings.
4) To increase knowledge of the University & requirements concerning academic performance and degree progress of students.
5) Become familiar with University resources available to students.
Evaluation:
The practicum student will be given continuous feedback and guidance by the Director and other staff of the CCPS Advising Center.

Remuneration: The Graduate Advisor will engage in advisory duties approximately 2-4 hours per week plus additional hours for occasional trainings, events, or other functions. The Graduate Advisor position is an unpaid volunteer role but may be used for academic credit for a practicum/internship. Meals and transportation (or mileage) will be provided during official AB activities (as approved by the Staff Advisor prior to the activity). A $250 professional development award is available for training and experiences that relate to advising activities (i.e.: participation in events coordinated by Michigan Campus Compact, BreakAway®, etc.). The Graduate Advisor primarily works with the Executive Vice President, Assessment and Development Chair, and Orientation Chair (Staff Advisor works directly with the following chair positions: President, Finance, Fundraising, Community Impact, and Public Relations).

(35%) Advise the Executive Vice President (formerly Education Chair) to oversee the recruitment, selection, orientation, training and development and overall assimilation of diverse student site leaders. Main components of the chair position include site leader selection day, site leader retreat (early September), and bi-weekly site leader meetings including educational components. Assist with overall management and monitor performance of site leaders.

(25%) Advise the Assessment and Development Chair in in selection of partner organizations and provide oversight to liability assessment/ management and travel arrangements. GVSU Alternative Breaks is a BreakAway®, the National Alterative Break Organization, affiliated program and was selected as the National Program of the Year in 2008.
Undergraduate research is often defined as a student pursing the creation of an original piece of scholarship through scientific method, creative exploration, or deep study. At Grand Valley, undergraduate research is approached through the lens of liberal education. The act of inquiry, or asking a question, sets students on the path of research and creative work. OURS has opportunities available for 1-2 practica students per semester. The practica will provide applicants with opportunities to better understand academic affairs through program development, and program assessments, and opportunities to connect directly with faculty.

Terms:
The Women’s Center, in conjunction with the College Men’s Group advisor, is seeking a graduate intern for the Winter 2013 semester. The internship will provide applicant with opportunities, advise an undergraduate conference planning team and program development specific to men and masculinities.
Position Description:
The graduate intern is responsible for sharing administrative leadership of the Women’s Center’s Violence Against Women (VAWA) grant, a U.S. Department of Justice grant. The experience allows the student to serve as a catalyst for change through research, education, and programming around college men. Specifically, the graduate student intern will assist in coordinating and advising the undergraduate college men’s conference planning team and coordinate GVSU first annual College Men’s Conference. Topics will include anti-violence, masculinities, and manhood; will engage in benchmarking best practices around the country; will teach about prevention and risk reduction through the creation and implementation of programs; will conduct evaluation of programs; and will administer budgeting and advising. The scope of the work requires the student to develop connections with not only the campus community, but also the larger Grand Rapids community and statewide network for masculinities in Higher Education.
Responsibilities:

Orientation & Supervision:
The Men’s Group Advisor and VAWA Grant Coordinator with provide the graduate intern with information regarding specifics of the VAWA grant, restrictions and project timelines. The graduate intern will be given the opportunity to observe learning skill sessions and workshops conducted by other AP staff and will participate in training online through the Department of Justice and through campus resources (i.e. crisis response) as needed.
The graduate intern will report directly to the College Men’s Group Advisor and the VAWA grant coordinator. The student will be a vital part of the professional staff and will be treated as such. They will be expected to attend department staff meetings, divison meetings, Campus Violence Prevention Team meetings, and any selected meetings appropriate to Graduate intern responsibilities. Graduate Intern, working with their supervisors, will complete a Learning Contract. The goal of the Learning Contract is to guide graduate assistants in gaining competeny in the following areas: research, instructions, leadership, personnel management, planning and projection. Competencies are gained through the work of the assistantship, through the academic program, and through participation in month professional development sessions. The performance of the graduate intern is evaluated at the end of the semester.

- Assist with the Commuter Student Services initiative offering communication and programming to approximately 60% of our students. This includes the production of monthly newsletters and specific needs-based events and focus groups. Engage commuter students in traditional campus events and assist student government in meeting the needs of the non-residential student.
- Develop daytime and weekend programs to complement the seven day experience. Work closely with the undergraduate weekend events intern to plan, produce, and assess this alternative programming initiative. Utilize creative marketing techniques to engage students in remaining on campus and engaging in the greater Grand Rapids community on the weekends. Responsibilities
Assist the Center for Global Studies and Engagement in writing a campus internationalization plan that will include an international student recruitment outlook, development of strategic partnerships, and development of a directional model for Education Abroad/Study Abroad. Interns must be interested in the field of International Education and must be motivated to direct their own learning.

With more than 340 international students and 150 students participating in study abroad, Ferris State University is committed to preparing students for a world that is global, connected, and diverse.
Our newly formed Center for Global Studies and Engagement seeks to provide a well-defined location and process for engaging Ferris State University on global issues, serve as an entity that attracts visiting scholars to Ferris, provide a platform to offer multi-disciplinary international and global courses, support the development of a new global curriculum, support innovative undergraduate degree and non-degree programs such as a minor in International Education, provide financial support in the exploratory and developmental phases of global initiatives, enhance partnerships outside of the university in support of a global curriculum, and provide academic support for Study Abroad programs.
Responsibilities
Assist the Center for Global Studies and Engagement in conceiving, planning and organizing educational and curricular events and activities; solicit, write and edit articles for campus and community media outlets; assist with the International Student Organization leadership development; and assist with the curricular development of degree and non-degree academic programs. Interns must be interested in the field of International Education and must be motivated to direct their own learning.
Commitment
- Availability for Spring term (February – June) and/or Summer (May – mid to late August)
- Some evening and weekend work will be required
- 32 hours a week
Learning Outcomes
- Gain a close look at the profession of International Education with an emphasis on outreach, programming, and communications.
- Gain experience working closely with faculty and administrators.
- Opportunity to develop network of professional contacts within the field of International Education.
- If an intern wishes to attend a professional NAFSA conference, OIE may pay for conference registration fees, pending funding availability. The intern would be responsible the cost of workshop attendance, travel, meals and accommodation.

- Salary: $1,280/month

Program Description:
GO! New Student Orientation is a program designed to improve student success during the first year of college at GRCC. In addition to developing an academic plan, students learn about college expectations, how to navigate campus, and develop an understanding of campus support programs and services. A parent/guest session is offered for those who support our students in their first year.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with Orientation Student Ambassador Training
- Deliver Orientation Programming (e.g., welcome session, technology/registration session, etc.)

Duties:

Plan and execute leadership and youth development programs* as follows:
- Students Together Educating People (STEP): A program comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors who are trained to present on the topics of peer pressure and bullying to fifth graders at the three elementary schools in EGR.
- Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM): A program comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors who are trained on team-building activities for third graders at the three elementary schools in EGR.
- Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU): A program comprised of freshmen who are trained to present and discuss the dangers of tobacco use to elementary and middle-school aged students.
- Recruit student volunteers and train for involvement in above programs.
- Maintain records of all activities and develop new procedures as necessary.
- Serve as role model for high school and middle school students.
Qualifications:
College students who are majoring in Education, Public Relations, Communications, and/or related fields. Candidate must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, attention to details, ability to manage several projects at once, excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to relate well with high school and middle school-aged students. Working knowledge on word processing is necessary.

Primary responsibilities include:
- Assist with the coordination of programs in the OME, attend OME staff meetings.
