E-News Fall 2012

Message from the Director

Colleagues,

We view the academies we authorize as our partners, and as our partners we provide opportunities for them to improve the practice of teaching. We create these learning opportunities for our partner schools, as we are evaluated based on their academic performance. Subsequently, we view assisting the schools we authorize as an important component of our work.

At Grand Valley State University we offer professional development in fourteen instructional areas during all four semesters of an academic year. We provide a 50% tuition reimbursement to our member schools faculty to pursue a Masters degree from GVSU. Additionally, we partnered with Education Trust of Washington DC to form a Learning Network with our 51 partner schools. The Learning Network is designed to improve the practice of teaching and learning.

We also provide our partner schools with opportunities to have reading specialists, instructional data experts, instructional technology consultant, and classroom management specialist go into the schools to assist with the teaching process. These advisors establish programs to help students in the learning progression.

It makes perfect sense to us that if we are evaluated by the academic performance of our member schools, then we should provide opportunities for them to improve their practice.  We are continually seeking ways to assist the academies we authorize, as their improved performance translates to improved student academic success.

Best,

Timothy H. Wood, Ph.D.

Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI)

The GVSU Charter Schoosl Office has partnered with Nora Chahbazi and Evidence Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) to help students reach their highest potential in reading.  We recognize the critical role that literacy plays in a student’s education both now and in the future.

William C. Abney Academy Elementary & Middle Echool along with Washington-Parks Academy, University Preparatory Academy Middle School, Mark Murray Elementary and Ellen Thompson Elementary are all participating in our first training sessions with EBLI in August.  Teachers will learn specific strategies to help children with phonetic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and spelling.  Our goal is to train teachers to teach reading effectively in order to build a solid reading foundation.  A solid reading foundation is critical to ensuring that all children succeed both in and out of school.
