Message from the Director

Colleagues,

This summer, the GVSU Charter Schools Office is offering an exciting array of professional development activities to the faculty within our portfolio of schools. As we have for the past two summers, we are once again partnering with Education Trust’s Richard Lemons to facilitate our Learning Network of Charter Schools.

This summer, the Learning Network will view effective leadership development programs that support leadership teams to improve overall school achievement and to close achievement gaps through targeted improvement of learning and teaching.

We encourage the return of 2010-2012 participant and anticipate the addition of up to nine new schools for 2012-2013.

Each GVSU Charter School that participates in the Learning Network fulfills part of their academic grant requirements.  We are asking that leadership teams attend in groups of three to five people for maximum results.

Richard will work with teams in Grand Rapids on August 7-8, and in Detroit on August 9-10.  Both workshops will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Additionally, in August we are offering a full month of professional development workshops.  Returning workshops include Guided Reading, DIBELS Training, Writing, Five-Minute Math Interventions, and NWEA Training.

Lissa Brunan, Assessment Specialist with the GVSU Charter Schools Office, will host a summer roundtable discussion where participants can share best practices and participate in an open discussion on how to create the best NWEA experience for your students and staff.  This roundtable is for proctors and coordinators of the NWEA MAP Test.

And lastly, Mark Thomas, principal at Northview High School, offers a one day workshop where participants will move through the process of using EPAS data for school improvement.  To maximize the experience, participants should bring their school’s Explore and Plan summary reports for each subject along with a copy of the corresponding Explore/Plan test booklets from this year’s testing cycle, as this data will be used during activities.

We hope our GVSU Charter School teachers and staff will take full advantage of these summer professional development activities, which are offered at no cost to schools in the GVSU portfolio of schools.

Enjoy your time off and we hope to see you at some of our events later in the summer.

Sincerely,

Timothy H. Wood, Ph.D.
