E-News Winter 2012

Message from the Director

We believe in partnering with the academies we authorize by providing quality programs to our member schools.  I have written in the past about the professional development workshops we offer, along with the 50% tuition reimbursement to our member schools faculty to pursue a Masters degree from GVSU and an opportunity to participate in The Learning Network facilitated by Dr. Richard Lemons.

At Grand Valley State University we also offer a program where we partner with some of our academies by providing local and international artists to work directly with the students on an art project throughout the year.   Programs at the schools range from trips to an art museum, to mural painting, to participating in ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, to photographic essays.  You can read more about the art partnership programs in the most recent GV Magazine by clicking here and turning to page 14.

We also offer a campus visit program for 11th and 8th graders.  Students are able to tour campus, hear from an admissions representative and a motivational speaker, and have lunch with current GVSU students.

We hope your school is taking advantage of these offerings, as we are continually seeking ways to assist the academies we authorize.

Timothy H. Wood, Ph.D.

Campus Visits

We are in the middle of our fall 11th grade campus visit program and so far it has been a hit. The visit includes a tour of GVSU's main campus, lunch, and a talk by the Admissions Department and other speakers to give the students an overview of the educational and student life experiences at the university.

All slots for 11th grade tours have been filled for the fall, but there are still limited slots for 8th grade visits in the spring.  There is no deadline to register your class; however, because we can accomodate only a certain number of students, we will take groups on a first come, first served basis.  To apply for a sponsored campus visit, click HERE and fill out the form.  Visit our website for additional information.

Professional Development

In the coming months you will see that we have pulled together the most sought after workshops for your professional development.  These workshops are free to charter schools authorized by GVSU.  Lunch or dinner is included in the registration and SB-CEUs will be available for most workshops.  We have changed our policy and now the CSO will pay directly for the SB-CEUs.  Click HERE to view and register for a workshop.
