Seymour K. Padnos, CEO and Chairperson of the Louis Padnos Iron and Metal Company of Holland, Michigan, the largest recycler of metal, paper and plastic in west Michigan, and Mrs. Esther R. Padnos are active proponents of the Grand Valley State University engineering programs. They have influenced the engineering curricula to have a strong environmental component. One result of their vision and action has been the School of Engineering’s award winning Design for Recycling program. This curriculum integrates environmentally responsible design and design for recycling throughout all of the BSE degree programs.

Approximately 10 scholarships of $2,500 per year are awarded. These competitive scholarships have been established by Seymour and Esther Padnos to support engineering students in accredited programs that integrate elements of design for recycling and environmentally responsible design.

 To be eligible, a student must have:

1. Applied for admission to GVSU prior to December 31,
2. Demonstrated an interest in environmental issues,
3. Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better either in high school (if a first year student) or at another accredited college or university (if a transfer student).
4. An ACT math sub-score of at least 27 and an ACT composite of at least 25, or an SAT math score of at least 665 and an SAT total of at least 1220
5. At least 6 units of high school math and science
6. Submitted the FAFSA form. Extra consideration will be given to applicants who have financial need.

Recipients will be selected by the Engineering Scholarship Committee from those students who meet the above qualifications and have been admitted to the University. Awards will be announced by the end of April. The scholarships are renewable on an annual basis, for up to six additional semesters, providing the recipient maintains the following level of scholarship:

1. Continues to be enrolled in engineering and carry a minimum of 15 credits each semester,
2. Maintains a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA, and
3. Successfully completes the engineering requirements for each academic year.

The Engineering Scholarship Committee monitors each recipient’s progress and notifies the Financial Aid Office of award renewal.
