Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Biomedical Engineering

Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes

The B.S.E. Biomedical Engineering Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.  See the program objectives, student outcomes and enrollment history below.

Program Educational Objectives:

Graduates of the Biomedical Engineering program are expected within a few years of graduation to:

  • Demonstrate technical competency in their careers
  • Function effectively in an industrial or academic environment
  • Engage in professional development
  • Shape their professions and societies

Note:  During the 2021-2022 academic year, Grand Valley State University revised the the university mission, vision, and value statements to align with the updated strategic plan. To ensure alignment with the university's mission, vision and value statements, which were approved by the Board of Trustees, the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing and School of Engineering’s mission, vision, and value statements will be reviewed and updated, and the constituent review process for the School of Engineering Program Educational Objectives will take place, with updates in accordance with the feedback received.

Feedback regarding the Biomedical Engineering program educational objectives is received from four primary constituencies:

  • Students enrolled in the program;
  • The employer base for the graduates and cooperative education students;
  • The alumni of the program; and,
  • The engineering faculty and administration

In addition to the four primary constituencies, the following external stakeholders are heavily involved in the success of the School of Engineering programs.

  • The West Michigan community, in which the majority of our co-op students and graduates practice and contribute both professionally and personally;
  • The State of Michigan

Student Outcomes:

The graduate will know and demonstrate:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
