Invasive Species Management position

West Michigan CISMA Program Coordinator

Position:  Full time (40 hrs/week) limited term position, through December 2016.  Continued employment is contingent upon securing funding.

Compensation: $16/hour

Closing Date: April 15, 2015

Work Location: Based in Grand Haven, field work throughout Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Montcalm and Mecosta counties.  Working from home office and/or other field offices are available options where appropriate.

Position Job Description / Coordinator Activities

Prevention

  • Oversee tracking and surveying of EDRR (early detection/rapid response) treatments in GIS (geographic information service) and MISIN (Midwest Invasive Species Information Network).         
  • Attend all EDRR, WMCISMA, Garlic Mustard Disposal, WMC Steering Committee meetings. Other WMC committee and subcommittee meetings as needed to perform job responsibilities
  • Develop an invasive species watch list through the guidance of the EDRR and WMCISMA committee. Setup the policies and procedures for the new watch list.
  • Launch aquatic program, broaden EDRR to include aquatic species in inland lakes. Start and promote the terrestrial and aquatic hitchhikers campaign (use existing State campaign)
  • Work with Beyond Beauty Coordinator and WMCISMA partners to assist in the development of Beyond Beauty campaign to encourage nurseries/garden centers to avoid invasive species in their inventories.

Treatment

  • Responsible for the maintenance and operation of all tool crib equipment. Write policy for use, check out and storage of tool crib. Keep tool crib up to date.
  • Be an active supporter and problem solver for strike teams (including support for treatments and monitoring)
  • Document treatments using GIS and MISIN
  • Administer garlic mustard disposal program
  • Address new issues and concerns that may arise related to funding requirements and treatment results

Education & Outreach

  • Develop signage for herbicide treatments to educate, foster interest and engage landowners
  • Assist with land owner outreach and various duties determined by WMCISMA committee
  • Create and distribute information through social media or newsletter or through partner information networks
  • Collaborate with WMC partners to hold training sessions on invasive species management for the public

Building Capacity / Program Sustainability

  • Support grant writing and keep updated on funding sources for a sustainable program
  • Collect and manage all program data, prepare required reports, ensure that all documentation is turned in to appropriate recipients. Keep up to date records and photos for grant documentation
  • Write annual report with assistance from other WMCISMA partners
  • Collaborate with other partner organizations
  • Coordinate cluster partners

Other Major Duties and Activities:

  • Prepare, present, and manage budget activities
  • Oversee and coordinate the Cost Share Program
  • Ensure that the goals of the Annual Operating Plans are accomplished; become familiar with all WMCISMA umbrella documents; complete annual reports/summaries
  • Works with others to secure additional funding for the WMCISMA action plan goals and for the Coordinator position
  • Serve as the nucleus of the WMCISMA and focal contact person for all the cooperators involved; coordinate WMCISMA meetings and related activities
  • Ensure that the Prevention, Treatment, Control, and Outreach projects decided upon by the group are adequately funded and accomplished in a timely manner
  • Ensure that annual reports/summaries are completed for the projects and adequately publicize the WMCISMA accomplishments
  • Complete other duties as assigned with minimal supervision

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of experience in land management and/or environmental work
  • Basic understanding of local natural lands and WMC partner’s various missions
  • Knowledge of invasive species identification and control
  • Must have valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle (mileage reimbursement will be paid at the current standard IRS rate)
  • Must be very detail oriented with a great respect for safety precautions
  • Be a  passionate problem solver that can work with multiple personalities and styles
  • Be able to collaborate with others as well as motivate others
  • Complete other duties as assigned with minimal supervision

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.  Preference will be given to candidates who possess their Category 6 pesticide applicator’s certification.
