Peer Mentor goes to New Orleans

Andrea Walker volunteered with Operation Nehemian. She helped sell furniture to the community for low prices, pulled invader species from the wetlands and on the last day she assisted at a nursing home and got to know the residents. Andrea stated, "This experience was one that I would never trade for anything in the world. I strongly urge everyone to go on at least one Alternative Spring Break before you leave Grand Valley."

Students go to Washington D.C.

Some lucky ESP students and two of our staff persons were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend the Annual Conference of African-American College and Graduate Students sponsored by the United States Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus. They traveled by van to Washington, D.C. for the even on March 13th and 14th.

Attending were ESP students Jeanine Anderson, Jemeia Durr, Valarie James, Dorothy Sewe and Carrie Leverett, along with ESP staff Karen Mead and Melissa Selby-Theut. Participants got introduced to the Senate support staff - many of whom are instrumental to the legislative process.

Jeanine said, "I have applied for several internships in D.C. because of the experience I had on this trip."

Carrie also had positive comments. She said, "I found being able to go to the Senate Gallery was the highlight of my trip. Being able to see Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, in person, along with many other senators, was pretty amazing."
