DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:By using a combination of genetic, biochemical, and physiological approaches, Dr. Bender’s group has studied the response of genes to nitrogen starvation. In particular they have characterized the role of a remarkably versatile regulator known as the Nitrogen Assimilation Control (NAC) protein. Dr. Bender will discuss how a simple question led to understanding a complex system, how a single regulator can be so versatile in its mechanism of action, and the surprising number of physiological functions NAC is able to regulate. In short, NAC is able to capture almost any biochemical pathway and put it under the control of the nitrogen-starvation signal.
