Description of the Organization

If you're looking to go into any recreation or youth sports careers after college this is a great internship. My boss is the Recreation Director Matt, besides him you only work with other Interns or volunteer coaches. Coopersville has a couple of parks that practices and games are held at, as well as the middle school fields.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I had to help set up equipment at the beginning of the season as well as help with any errands Matt needed help with. I also had to referee basketball games. We make suer that all events and practices are running smoothly.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

One thing I learned at my time here is that you always have to be adaptable, something will almost always come up and distract you from the task your currently on. You also have to have a calm demeanor, most of us know how some parents get at their kids sporting events. If a parent gets a little loud or starts yelling or complaining, you have to keep a cool head and try to calm them down and find a solution.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of the internship was looking at youth sports from a broader view. Instead of being a player or coach and only focusing on that, you get to see all the stuff that happens behind the scenes of trying to put together practices and games.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience hasn't influenced my career goals. It is a good experience. After this Internship I haven't ruled out youth/rec sports as a possible career path, but I also didn't love it enough to 100% go down this career path.
