Privately Funded Scholarships
Grand Valley strives to provide a gateway for students who need and want access to higher education. Today, more than ever, private support is critical to helping students achieve their goals. Privately funded scholarships are an investment in our students and in the future of West Michigan and beyond.
Privately funded scholarship opportunties
Though Grand Valley prides itself on keeping the cost of education below that of comparable institutions, decreases in state funding make it difficult to fully meet the need of students who are ineligible for government programs that defray the costs of college. Private scholarship support enables Grand Valley to attract high-achieving students who might otherwise be unable to afford higher education.
For students whose academic accomplishments warrant special recognition, Grand Valley offers merit-based scholarships. All incoming freshmen and transfer students are automatically considered for these awards, which require high academic achievement. Scholarships allow these talented students to continue to learn, explore, and become leaders.
Program-based scholarships at Grand Valley are established by donors who want to support students who share a personal area of interest, such as music or study abroad. Scholarships are often founded by donors who wish to contribute to the experiential learning of a Grand Valley student.
Graduate assistantships and fellowships allow students to fund their graduate studies with a great deal of independence, allowing them to immerse themselves in course study, research, and scholarship. Graduate assistantships or fellowships can be provided for an area of academic study or demonstrated need by a prospective student.
Types of Scholarships
These scholarship awards are created from a gift each year, ensuring regular, sustained support for Grand Valley students. The funds are used immediately to help students and do not carry forward into future years.
An endowed scholarship is a permanent component of the university’s greater endowment fund. These gifts are invested in the Grand Valley Endowment and the earnings are used to award scholarships every year. They may bear a donor’s name or the name of a loved one, and are created through an outright gift, a pledge over a period of five years, or a planned gift.
