Finding Joy in Giving Back

Tim and Cherie Duthler

In 1983, Tim Duthler ‘73, and his wife Cherie, made a decision that would impact themselves, their children, and Grand Valley students for the next four decades.

As an alumnus, Tim is already a Laker for a Lifetime. He chose to take that connection to the next level by giving his first gift to Grand Valley just ten years after graduating with a degree in Psychology.

“I developed an appreciation for the foundation and knowledge I received in my psychology education. Both in the classroom and through my research experience, GVSU helped prepare me for my professional life,” said Tim.

Tim and Cherie’s three children all attended Grand Valley. Despite not graduating from GVSU, Cherie says the quality of education that her husband and children received, as well as the family atmosphere, has allowed her to connect with the university.

“It has been fun going to events and getting to know the staff, alumni and students at Grand Valley,” said Cherie.

The Duthler’s want their gifts to provide opportunities for prospective GVSU students who are seeking an enriching educational experience. This is why they became Alumni Champions.

As champions, Tim and Cherie engage with other alumni to encourage them to play a more active role in supporting Grand Valley’s students.

“I was looking for ways to assist in GVSU’s growth. I am proud to be a contributor to the success and growth of GVSU over the last 40 years,” said Tim.

Tim and Cherie are native to the West Michigan community, so they are able to see firsthand how Grand Valley impacts the growth of the area. They have come to appreciate the relationship between the two communities.

“We feel there is nothing more valuable than appreciating the opportunity to give back to GVSU. The university has given so much to us and there is so much joy in giving back to the school. We understand what an integral part of the community GVSU has become,” said Tim.
