For the past 20 years, Janet Potgeter has been a part of the Grand Valley State University community. She started off in Facility Services and now works as the Geology Department’s office coordinator. She has been able to see Grand Valley grow into the influential university it is today, and has contributed to this growth by giving a gift to the university.

“Grand Valley has so much to offer and it does more than just encourage education. The university is a huge part of the community, it betters the Grand Rapids area as a whole,” Potgeter said. “Giving back is just the right thing to do.”

While working at the university, Potgeter has seen first-hand how generous donors have helped to foster the success of her department.

“The gifts we’ve received, especially from alumni, have been a great support system to future generations of staff and students,” Potgeter said.

She also knows that contributions like hers have directly benefited students of all types.

“When I made my gift, I did so to make a difference in the lives of our students,” she said. “I see the benefits students receive by not having to worry and stress over college expenses and debt. They are able to take the next step in their life by receiving a solid education.”

Because of the culture of academic excellence among students and the supportive environment here, the Grand Valley family will gain more Potgeter members.

“Actually, my kids are coming to Grand Valley and they are so excited,” she said. “I know that by keeping Grand Valley going strong, my kids are going to have an amazing experience and I know the university is going to prepare them for their lives beyond college. As a parent, that is very comforting to know. Our family is Grand Valley.”
