Graduate Dean's Citations Honor Outstanding Students
Each Fall and Winter semester, the Office of Graduate Studies hosts the Graduate Student Celebration and Dean’s Citations for Academic Excellence.
The Winter 2012 event was held on April 20, with a reception in the Hager-Lubbers Exhibition Hall, followed by an awards ceremony in the Loosemore Auditorium. Dr. Jeffrey A. Potteiger, Dean of Graduate Studies presented 35 awards to graduate students before an audience of approximately 160 students, faculty, and family members. Students who had previously received departmental honors and the Niemeyer award for outstanding graduate students at the university awards banquet were given honors cords, representing graduate education, to be worn at commencement.
Officers of the Graduate Student Association presented faculty/staff mentor awards to seven faculty members for their outstanding work with graduate students. Awardees included: Vijay Gondhalekar, Finance, Avis Hewitt, English, Richard Jelier, Public Administration, Jerry Johnson, Social Work, Sonja Johnson, Van Andel Global Trade Center, Sue Nieboer, Health Administration, and John Stevenson, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies.
The Kimboko Inclusion award was given to Mark Staves, Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology, for his significant contribution to making graduate education at GVSU a more diverse and inclusive community.
