Winners of the first annual Juried Student Art Show were announced at the opening reception Tuesday, March 19, in the Padnos Art Gallery, in the Calder Art Center.

Two Purchase Award winners, Ashley Umstead and Rachel Marcincavage, each received $300 and will have their work on permanent display at Grand Valley. Ariana Ortega won the $150 Faculty/Staff Award for a student in the Art and Design Department. Additionally, there was one honorable mention for each category, including ceramics, graphic designs, paintings, sculptures, drawings, illustrations, photographs, mixed media and electronic works, film and video, metals and printmaking.

Students were able to enter artwork from the past two years of classes in the Department of Art and Design and the School of Communications. More than 350 entries were judged by three artists from different teaching institutions: Johanna Pass, associate professor at Central Michigan University, Kate Silvio, a teacher at the Kendall College of Art and Design, in Grand Rapids, and Mike Rebholz, a photographer and teacher from Madison, Wisconsin.

The exhibition, ongoing through March 28, is open to the public with free admission. For more information, contact Bill Hosterman in the Department of Art and Design at hostermw@gvsu.edu.
