Salary Continuation / Income Protection


SICK LEAVE ALLOWANCE

The University provides a sick leave program that includes income protection during periods of disability. Regular full-time staff earn .05 hours of sick leave for each regular hour worked per week. Unused sick leave accrual shall not exceed one hundred and seventy six (176) hours, with one hundred sixty (160) hours eligible for carryover at the beginning of each calendar year. Probationary staff shall earn sick leave at the same rate, however, they may not use accrued sick leave until after 6 months of employment.

Coverage terminates on the last day of employment.

Refer to the Maintenance, Grounds and Service Staff contract for detailed information concerning the usage of sick leave. Sick leave usage is subject to the approval of your supervisor.

SHORT-TERM DISABILITY
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:

All regular full-time members of the Grand Valley State University clerical, office, technical, maintenance, grounds, service or public safety staff become eligible for short-term disability income benefits six (6) calendar months after their date of hire. Dependents are not covered. To be eligible for short-term disability income benefits, you must be unable to perform all duties required of your position and be under the direct care of a physician. Care begins at the time of the first examination by a physician. The physician cannot be a relative.

HOW TO RECEIVE BENEFITS WHEN DISABLED:
A
Short-Term Disability Income Application is available at the office of Human Resources or on the HR website.  The application must be completed by you and your physician and submitted to Human Resources.

BENEFIT INFORMATION:
If you are eligible for short-term disability benefits you will be paid 75% of your basic compensation, at the time of disability, after a waiting period of twenty (20) working days. Payments will continue for a maximum period of six (6) months.

Benefits will be reduced by any amount paid from:

1. Compulsory "no-fault" motor vehicle coverage for lost earnings.

2. Social Security or Railroad Retirement due to your disability. It will be assumed that you are entitled to the largest amount of Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, including those for dependents until the actual determination of benefits is received from the appropriate administration. A copy of the determination must be given to Human Resources to adjust the benefit accordingly.

PERIODS OF DISABILITY:
If periods of disability are due to unrelated causes and separated by a return to active work, they are treated as separate periods.

If periods of disability are due to related causes and they are separated by a return to active work for at least two weeks in a row, they are treated as separate periods. If there is no such separation, it is treated as one period of disability.


NOT COVERED:
No benefits will be paid for a disability which occurs as a result of:

1. An injury or illness due to employment with any employer or self-employment (These are generally covered under Worker's Compensation)
2. An intentionally self-inflicted injury
3. Involvement in the Armed Forces of any country
4. Involvement in the commission of a felony

Coverage terminates on the last day of employment.

EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA):  Refer to the Maintenance, Grounds, and Services contract for detailed information concerning the usage of salary continuation. Salary Continuation is subject to approval of your supervisor.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY:
The University provides a partial income replacement program, which provides monthly payments of 60% of your base salary subject to a $10,000 monthly maximum. The long-term disability insurance policy is administered by Standard Life Insurance Company.

  • Long-term disability benefits are effective the first day of the month following date of hire.
  • Coverage terminates on the last day of employment.

This plan will pay a monthly benefit for a period of total disability caused by a disease or accidental bodily injury. Click here for a copy of our LTD Certificate.
