Designed to introduce you to the cultural diversity and complexities of the Caribbean region, this program will introduce you to the study of Caribbean history and expose you to a variety of cultural activities. The program will offer one course which students must take.  The course will begin on the GVSU campus for the first three weeks and then depart for Jamaica for the last 3 weeks of the spring semester. The course is a survey that will explore the cultural, socio-economic, and political development of the Caribbean region from the pre-Columbian times to the contemporary era.  The course will also examine the role of women in Caribbean history and their experiences during the periods of slavery and colonialism.

The program will include several all day field trips to historic sites that reflect the cultural diversity and history of the people of Jamaica and the region. These trips will include visits to the National Gallery of Jamaica; Appleton Sugar Estate and factory; Reggae Music and Bob Marley Museums; Rose Hall Great House; the Colonial Estate of Devon House; Port Royal, the home of the buccaneers and pirates; and the famous Dunns River Falls. Students will have the pleasure of experiencing how coffee is grown in the Blue Mountains; and in their spare time, take a bob sled ride through the hills, have fun on a canopy walk or zip glide across the rain forest; swim with the dolphins at Dolphins Cove, enjoy the beautiful beaches and dance to the rhythms of island life, and much more.

You will register for a total of three credits:
