Freshman Housing Assignments
A freshman is eligible for placement if they have a housing deposit on file, a completed application and contract, and an orientation reservation. Incoming freshmen who apply by May 1 are guaranteed an on-campus housing assignment for the Fall/Winter semesters.
How early could a prospective student have applied for on campus housing?
The housing application opens in early September for the following Fall/Winter semesters.
How are housing assignments and roommates determined?
Applications are reviewed and assignments are made in application date order. Based on your application date, you may not be placed in your first or second choice style preference. Traditional Style is added as a default preference for all incoming freshmen.
Roommate requests must be mutual, received prior to May 1, and are not guaranteed. Each roommate must have a complete housing application and request the other via the MyHousing Overview. To ensure a roommate request, The MyHousing Overview should indicate “my roommate choice” ranks higher than “my building choice.” Roommate pairs are placed based on the earlier of the two application dates. If no roommate is requested, roommates are determined by a software system that matches students based on preferences in the application.
When can I view my housing assignment?
Freshman housing assignment information will begin posting on the MyHousing Overview in mid to late June and will also be sent via the GVSU student email address.
What if I would like to reside in a Living-Learning Community?
If an incoming freshman is interested in a Living/Learning community, they must indicate that community as their first preference. For example, the first preference would be “Women’s Leadership House 4-Bedroom,” not “VanSteeland 4-Bedroom.” For more information on Living/Learning Communities, click HERE.
