Job summary

A primary customer service contact for the Steelcase Library evenings and weekends delivering an array of library services, securing the library and its resources, and ensuring an environment conducive to learning. Because the Steelcase Library is a branch, this position requires a significant level of functional independence.

Primary duties (Scope of Work)

  • A primary customer service contact, referring patrons to people and resources throughout the library system, generally assisting patrons in using the library, and providing reference assistance when librarians are not present
  • Handles circulation transactions with students, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the public
  • Coaches student employees in communicating with clarity and tact and models appropriate behavior
  • Handles student, faculty and staff library accounts, reconciles cash drawer, and exercises discretion in reconciliation of patron account discrepancies
  • Interprets and enforces wide-range of library procedures and policies; communicates those policies with clarity and tact
  • Helps ensure the safest possible library environment and the security of library resources and equipment
  • Opens and closes the library, including reconciling previous days receipts, preparing approximately 30 computers and various other technical equipment for patrons, ensuring all patrons have vacated the building when closing, securing the building
  • Troubleshoots library equipment, including laptops, microfilm readers, copiers, scanners, and assists patrons in their use
  • Identifies problems with and assists troubleshooting of the librarys automated retrieval system, including contacting Operations Manager or retrieval system vendor when applicable
  • Configures automated retrieval system carriers for placement of new materials
  • Files updates for librarys government document, legal and tax collections; prepares microfilm collection, including withdrawal of duplicate print periodicals when appropriate
  • Supervises student workers

  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in a fast-paced work environment while delivering exemplary customer service
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in interpreting polices and applying procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and independently, typically with limited backup resources
  • Minimum of 2 years related work experience and/or relevant training
  • Demonstrated competence with computer applications
  • Willingness to work evening hours and weekends
  • High school graduate

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Familiarity with an integrated library system (Voyager preferred)

Supervision Received

The Steelcase Library Assistant (part time) receives some direct supervision but is often the only staff member present in the library. At times is required to make crucial decisions regarding patron safety or the librarys integrity.

Supervises student workers and may direct some projects.
