JOB TITLE:  Library Senior Associate, Night Circulation

Job summary

Responsible for the Zumberge Library at night, providing the full array of library services, ensuring the safest possible environment for students and staff, and maintaining the security of library resources and equipment.

Primary duties (Scope of Work)

  • Primary customer service contact, referring patrons to people and resources throughout the library system and generally assisting patrons in using the library
  • Handles circulation transactions with students, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the off-campus community
  • Provides a continuum of library services after the regular staff leaves for the day, including basic reference, document delivery, course reserve, periodicals, and facilities management
  • Trains students employees in all aspects of library policies and procedures and coaches them in communicating with clarity and tact; models appropriate behavior
  • Handles student, faculty and staff library accounts, reconciles cash drawer, and exercises discretion in reconciliation of patron account discrepancies
  • Interprets and enforces wide-range of library procedures and policies; communicates those policies with clarity and tact
  • Closes the library, shutting down 50 computers and various other technical equipment, ensuring all patrons have vacated the building when closing, securing the building and library money and property, activating alarms
  • Troubleshoots library equipment, including laptops, microfilm readers, copiers, scanners, and assists patrons in their use
  • Handles a significant number of campus-wide telephone inquires after the university switchboard closes (9:00 pm weekdays, 5:00 pm weekends)
  • Supervises student workers
  • In extreme cases may implement the librarys inclement weather policy while on duty, including making the decision to alter library hours as needed

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Ability to anticipate and quickly adapt to any potential problems arising in the library
  • Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with diverse populations
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in a fast-paced work environment while delivering exemplary customer service
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in interpreting polices and applying procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and independently, typically with limited backup resources
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience and/or relevant training
  • Demonstrated competence with computer applications
  • High school graduate

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Familiarity with an integrated library system (Voyager preferred.)

Supervision Received

The Night Circulation Manager receives little direct supervision and is often the only staff member present in the library. At times is required to make crucial decisions regarding patron safety or the librarys integrity.

Supervision Exercised

Because the Night Manager is the only staff member present, this position requires an ability to quickly make difficult decisions regarding patron safety and facility maintenance.
