The theme for Laker for a Lifetime is simple and clear: a lifetime affiliation and sense of ownership of Grand Valley State University for its students and alumni. It is a direct reflection of Grand Valley’s mission of educating students to shape their lives, their professions, and their societies.

Laker for a Lifetime is visually represented by a type treatment that uses the university’s familiar logo elements and typeface paired with a contemporary font to form a distinctive, inviting, and easily recognizable identity. This type treatment may only be used in accordance with the standards in this usage guide.

What is the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment?

The Laker for a Lifetime type treatment consists of two distinct graphic elements: the Laker for a Lifetime wordmark and the single-line version of the Grand Valley State University logo.


 

Laker for a Lifetime wordmark

The Laker for a Lifetime wordmark may not be used alone, altered in any way, or used as part of a logo or design.  It must always appear as part of the complete Laker for a Lifetime type treatment that also includes the single-line version of the Grand Valley logo.

Single-line version of the Grand Valley logo

The single-line version of the Grand Valley logo (logomark and logotype) may be used without the Laker for a Lifetime wordmark, however when it appears with the Laker for a Lifetime wordmark, it must be in the approved design configuration from a file provided by Jill Dooley, Senior Director, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, at (616) 331-6000 or dooleyj@gvsu.edu.

You may not recreate or alter the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment, the Laker for a Lifetime wordmark, or the single-line Grand Valley logo in any way. Replicating any part of the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment in a different font may not be attempted.


Who can use the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment?

The initial audience for the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment is current students. Faculty members, staff members, university departments, student organizations, and individual students are allowed to use the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment on communications materials for signature activities and events specifically for current students that incorporate any of the following guiding principles of the initiative:

  1. Create awareness (early in a student’s career at GVSU)
    1. Create a culture of engagement and philanthropy by making incoming students aware of Grand Valley’s history and mission, core values, how GVSU is funded, and its traditions.
    2. Help students understand how philanthropy changes lives.
    3. Encourage student investment of time, talent, and financial resources.
  2. Develop gratitude (building throughout a student’s career at GVSU)
    1. Create and promote traditions and rituals that honor the student, honor Grand Valley, and encourage affinity and character development.
    2. Foster Laker pride by building a sense of community within Grand Valley.
  3. Cultivate a culture of giving (building throughout a student’s career at GVSU and beyond)
    1. Foster inclination and willingness of students to give their time, talent, and financial resources.
    2. Educate students about why they should give back and begin to encourage the behavior of giving.

Laker for a Lifetime type treatment display requirements

The Laker for a Lifetime type treatment should be clearly and prominently displayed on the front of each communications piece on which it is used.

Although the type treatment can be resized it should not be distorted or altered. The type treatment should not be placed where a hole-punch or binding may interfere with it.

The Laker for a Lifetime type treatment may not be used as part of a sentence.

 

Official colors

Color is a very important element in recall and recognition of the university brand. That is why it is important to match Grand Valley's colors as closely as possible in print or on the Web.

Type treatment colors

The type treatment must be one of the following:

  1. Blue and white ("for a lifetime" must appear or print in white)
  2. Black and white ("for a lifetime" must appear or print in white)
  3. Blue, black, and white ("for a lifetime" must appear or print in white)
  4. White and black ("for a lifetime" must appear or print in black) for a dark paper or background
  5. Blue with transparent background for use on white or light colored background or paper
  6. Black with transparent background for use on white or light colored background or paper
  7. Blue and black with transparent background for use on white or light colored background or paper
  8. White for a dark paper or background for use on white or light colored background or paper


Dimensions standards

The type treatment (which consists of the wordmark plus the single-line Grand Valley logo) MUST measure at least 1.25 inches wide (minimum actual sizes shown). Always provide space around the type treatment, free of typography, graphics, or other distracting elements.

Do not change the proportions or otherwise distort the type treatment.

Using the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment with a non-Grand Valley logo

Because it includes an approved version of the university logo, the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment fulfills the university logo usage requirements outlined in the Using and Downloading a Logo section of this website and no other Grand Valley logo is necessary on the piece.

Items using the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment that will be commercially printed or resold

If you are applying any logos or wordmarks registered for trademark by Grand Valley State University (including the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment) to items that will be commercially printed or resold, your vendor must become licensed through Licensing Resource Group. These vendors have already been licensed.

 

Laker for a Lifetime type treatment usage tracking and archiving

In order to most effectively grow and expand the Laker for a Lifetime initiative in the future, the university will closely track and control all uses of the Laker for a Lifetime type treatment. In addition, all approvals of use of the type treatment include the requirement that a sample of the final, printed, and distributed piece be sent to Jill Dooley, Senior Director, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, University Development, 100 CHS, for archiving.
