What is the “co-curricular” approved designation?

As part of Grand Valley State University’s commitment to providing students with a strong liberal education, two classes (LIB 100: Introduction to Liberal Education and LIB 201: Diversity in the United States) have been structured to include a “co-curricular” component. The co-curriculum is designed to help students connect and apply course content to life outside the classroom.

Both classes require students to attend one or more “approved” events that meet the criteria set by the Office of Integrative Learning.   Any university event that meets the following criteria is eligible for LIB 100 or LIB 201 designations:

  • The event needs to compliment the class content of either LIB 100 and/or LIB 201.  (see included course descriptions and course goals for LIB 100 and LIB 201)

  • The event needs to be accessible to all GVSU students.

  • The event needs to engage students in the learning process by describing learning outcomes and evaluating the success of those outcomes.  This is part of the application process.

Why apply for co-curricular approval for your event?

  • Increased visibility and promotion of your organization/event.

  • Directly connect your event to people who are interested in programs like yours.

  • Draw new types of attendees to your event.

  • Provide an opportunity for students to connect and apply knowledge gained from in-class learning to issues and life outside the classroom.

How do I get my event designated as a co-curricular event?

If you would like to apply to have your event approved for LIB 100 and/or LIB 201 designations please fill out the Co-Curriculum Program Designation form online. In addition to basic information about the event, the form (which must be submitted at least 10 business days before your event is to take place) requires you to address the following:

  • The event’s learning objectives

  • The event’s instructional format/pedagogy

  • An assessment tool for the event

*An event evaluation is also required and is due within 5 business days after your event takes place.

What are learning objectives?

Learning objectives are statements that identify what you hope to teach through your event. Learning objectives are often outcome-based, that is, they list specifically what knowledge, skills, abilities participants should gain by attending your event.  There are tips on writing learning objectives on the Co-Curriculum Program Designation form page.

How do I find co-curricular events?

There are a couple of ways you can find co-curricular events.  You can search the campus calendar for "LIB 100" and/or "LIB 201."  You can also look at out list of events here.

Who do I contact about the event?

The Office of Integrative Learning does not administer the events.  Please contact the event coordinators listed on the campus calendar.  You can also find the event coordinator information on our Learning Outcomes document here.

Why isn't my event linked on your calendar?

We do our very best to link the events listed on our calendar to the campus calendar information.  Please be sure you have posted your event information on the campus calendar so that we can link to it from here.

How do I find my Learning Outcomes?
